It consists of either mixed crystals or compounds of ferromagnetic oxides with one or several oxides of bivalent metals like nickle, manganese, zinc etc.,. This mixture is moulded into the desired shape and sintered at high temperature.

Ceramics offer a large number of advantages over metallic materials, which makes ferrites attractive for a variety of applications.

Unlike in transformers using metallic stampings, where the core area can be adjusted by selecting the proper stack height, ferrite core of a particular size has an unalterable core area. Thus the design procedure for ferrite transformers is modified to suit this restriction.
