Supervisory control and data acquisition system or SCADA is a combination of hardware elements and software applications that allow the operator to control various processes remotely as well as locally. Web-based SCADA or wireless SCADA enables live data monitoring and gives access to real-time data for the remotely installed machines. It also allows the user to monitor the performance and working of the machine. Web SCADA or Internet SCADA utilises the use of Internet Protocol (IP) technology instead of the traditional point-to-multipoint serial communication in SCADA. Use of Web-based SCADA enables wide range connectivity and helps in machine automation and monitoring. Web-based SCADA also enables plant automation, industrial automation and machine automation. Remote monitoring of various on-field electrical machines, electronic devices, production lines, and industrial processes is possible by integrating RTU or data logger at the site, which communicates to the web-based SCADA software at the control centres through TCP/IP.

Components of a SCADA Automation System:
A web-based SCADA or wireless SCADA system consists of five major components: a Remote terminal unit (RTUs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Human-machine interface (HMI), a supervisory system and a communication infrastructure.

A remote terminal unit or RTU is an electronic device that is controlled through a microprocessor. It acts as an interface to the physical objects and web-based SCADA or wireless SCADA or Distributed control systems (DCS). The RTUs collect the output digital or analog field data from sensors and passes it to the backend server or central monitoring station. The RTU consists of setup for software that is needed to connect data input streams to data output streams, communication protocols and have built-in troubleshooting protocols. RTUs have application in various systems and processes. These include petrochemical industries, agriculture, nuclear power plants, chemical plants, and waste water treatment plants, food processing, automobile and pharmaceutical industries. RTUs are widely used in industrial level control systems.

A programmable logic controller or PLC is a digital computer consisting of a computer programmable microprocessor. It consists of a non-volatile memory, CPU, Input and Output devices, power supply and programming devices. PLC receives the input data through the sensors or devices attached to it, processes it and controls the output according to the pre-programmed functionalities. Earlier, manufacturing processes were controlled by industries using relays. However, these relays consumed high power and required high maintenance. Therefore, to automate and to make the manufacturing processes easier PLCs were used. A PLC can be programmed using Ladder Logic or C programming languages.

Human-machine interface (HMI) is the interface that consists of hardware and software to connect a person to an automated machine or device. It translates the user inputs into signals that a machine could understand. HMIs help the operators to monitor and review industrial processes, identify issues and visualise the data. It helps in optimisation of the industrial processes. HMIs cannot fetch data or access the databases, however, they provide visual information to the users. HMIs acts as an effective communication tool in a SCADA system (web-based SCADA or wireless SCADA).

The communication infrastructure connects the RTUs or data loggers in the field to the web-based SCADA software at the backend server. It relays the information or data from the remotely placed or field RTUs/data loggers/PLCs to the backend server.

Supervisory computers or system is responsible for collecting data values on the process from the field devices and sends control commands to them. It enables communication between the on field controllers and the HMI or software present in the control room. Depending on the size of the SCADA systems, supervisory system may consist of single or multiple computers and servers.



Working of SCADA Automation System:
A SCADA automation system works by gathering or fetching information in the form of signals that communicates through channels in order to enable user to remotely control the on-field device or equipment. So to communicate with a machine the SCADA application requires a hardware, called Remote Terminal Unit or RTU. The GSM/GPRS RTUs or data loggers fetch data values from the input devices such as sensors, encoders, push buttons or switches. This acquired data is then sent to the web SCADA application through TCP/IP. The web-SCADA or wireless SCADA application then apply logics and displays the data through HMI in the form of reports, alert messages or graphical representation as per the userís request.

Applications of SCADA Automation System

1. SCADA Automation For Water Pump House:

Water pumping stations are facilities where pumps and other units are installed to pump water from one location to another. These pumps are used to increase water pressure in places where there is insufficient difference in the water levels. However, the installation of water pumps require high capital costs. Moreover, its operation requires high energy supply and technical personnel. The pump operation can be controlled manually or automatically. Manual control maybe favourable in case of small pump house. However, through automatic control the pumps can be turned on or off according to the pressure or time schedules. Another way to control the operation and for maintenance of the pump stations is to use remote monitoring control systems. If you wish to run and operate your water pump house from a local computer or a remote computer, we can help you with developing the web SCADA applications. Using web SCADA, the operator can automatically turn on/off the pumps at pre-defined time schedules. 2. SCADA Automation For Sub Stations:

An electrical substation forms a part of an electrical system that involves generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. Earlier, the substations were maintained manually, requiring manual data collection or adjustment of the equipment. However, as the electrical power supply system grew in size and complexity, need for remote monitoring or automated control was realised. These days’ unattended substations rely on wireless SCADA platform for remote control and monitoring. Softbitonline manufactures GSM/GPRS/SMS/PLC enabled wireless RTU for HT/LT power transformers and substation automation. All the electrical parameters of the transformer can be gathered through web SCADA based central control room. Using our GSM/GPRS/SMS/PLC enabled wireless RTU, the user can set SMS alerts corresponding to the Hi/Low values from sensors placed for monitoring energy parameters, oil and windings temperatures, oil leakage etc. It can also be used to remotely switch on/off the ACBs/MCCBs/OCBs using mobile phones or PCs. Automatic switching operation is also possible using a built-in timer. Our GSM/GPRS based RTUs has built in modem that uses GPRS SIM card that forwards data wirelessly to the backend server with web based SCADA software on it. In case of overloading, oil leakages, arcing, low oil levels or other operational issues, a signal will be sent to the wireless RTU, which will in turn send alerts to the concerned technicians or personnel in central control room along with SMS alerts. Therefore, you can easily monitor, maintain and control your sub station from any location using our web SCADA application.

3. SCADA For Energy Management:

Energy management refers to monitoring and controlling the energy produced and consumed. It aims to conserve the resources, protect the climate or environment and reduce cost. It involves metering of the energy consumed. The data relating to that is collected and analysed to find ways to reduce energy consumption. People can manage the energy consumption in different locations using a centralized SCADA system. The wireless SCADA can be installed on a central server. The energy data from different locations is gathered with the help of GSM/GPRS based wireless RTUs. This data can then be sent to central wireless SCADA system for live monitoring and analysis. The user can set SMS alerts or receive data on 5 pre-registered mobile phone numbers using the SMS service.

4. SCADA Automation For Machines/Plants:

Machine and Plant automation basically deals with automation of the various manufacturing processes. It also involves automation of quality control and handling processes. Plant and machine automation can be achieved using PLCs, I/O modules or computers. It can also be achieved using wireless SCADA or web SCADA application. Be it a food processing machine, oil extracting machine, air conditioning plant, refrigeration plant, power generation system, power transmission lines, or power distribution lines.
